Juliette Visits with Polar Bears

Juliette the Bookworm is ready to visit with polar bears. Juliette the Bookworm needs your help to discover more information and spread the message about her findings. The first part of your mission is to learn more about polar bears. The second part is to share the information with your community, to help them understand the effects that humans have had on them.

NOTE TO LEADERS: Since this program encourages girls to read and seek information, it may be helpful to have them meet at a library at least once while working on the patch.

Patch Requirements:

Brownie Girl Scouts - Complete at least 5 activities, including the two starred.

Junior Girl Scouts - Complete at least 7 activities, including the two starred.

Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts - Complete at least 9 activities, including the two starred.

Activities:

*1. Read a fictional or factual book about polar bears and draw a picture of one of the scenes in the book. Tell others in your troop or group which part of the book your picture represents.

*2. Find out how humans have affected the life and habitat of polar bears (hunting for pelts, for example).

3. Set up a display in your community to let others know where and how polar bears live. Be there to explain your display.

4. Find out about at least five species of plants and five species of animals that share the polar bear’s habitat. Explain how they have been affected by human presence.

5. Find out about at least two careers dealing with polar bears.

6. Make a troop scrapbook about polar bears. Collect items from newspapers or magazines. Display your scrapbook at your local library.

7. Write a story from the point of view of a polar bear. Share your story with others in your troop or group, or with a group of younger girls.

8. Learn as much as you can about how humans have affected the polar bear’s habitat. Discuss whether the effect has been positive or negative.

9. Find out about at least one organization that is trying to prevent polar bear extinction. Get information from them on what you and your troop can do to help.

10. Find out on what continents polar bears primarily live. Find out if people live there also. If people are there, find out how they live, including types of food, shelter, clothing, etc.

11. Take an imaginary trip to where polar bears live. Find out what types of clothing you would need to take, special supplies, best time of the year to travel, etc.

12. Draw a poster encouraging other people to learn about polar bears. Display it in your community. Show others what steps they can take to help the polar bears.
