Juliette Travels in Time

Juliette the Bookworm is ready to explore life in the 1860’s, the time when our founder Juliette Gordon Low was born. Juliette the Bookworm needs your help to discover more information and spread the message about her findings. The first part of your mission is to learn about life in the 1860’s. The second part is to share the information with your community, to help them understand what life was like for our founder Juliette Gordon Low.

Note to Leaders: Since this program encourages girls to read and seek information, it may be helpful to have them meet at a library at least once while working on the patch.

Patch Requirements:

Brownie Girl Scouts - Complete at least 5 activities, including the numbers 1 & 2.

Junior Girl Scouts - Complete at least 7 activities, including the numbers 1 & 2.

Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts - Complete at least 9 activities, including the numbers 1 & 2.

1.  Read a fictional or factual book about life in the late 1800’s. Draw a picture of one of the scenes from the book. Tell others in your troop or group which part of the book it represents.

2.  Watch the video "The Golden Eaglet." Discuss how recognitions have changed in Girl Scouting.

3.  Read a book about Juliette Low’s life. Set up a display showing how life was for Juliette. Be available to explain your display. The display could be at a school or service unit event.

4.  Find at least five items in your house that have changed since the 1860’s. Find out who invented them and when.

5.  What has been a major improvement in living since the 1860’s? Where did it begin? (For instance transportation, how has that changed, where did the change begin?)

6.  Make a scrapbook that deals with Juliette Low. Include Girl Scout events that happen in your area.

7.  Write a story about life in the 1860’s. Share your story with others in your troop or group, or with a group of younger girls.

8.  Find out about Girl Guides. Which came first: Girl Scouts or Girl Guides? How many Associations of Girl Guides are there?

9.  Find out about Savannah, Georgia. What is the current population? How many people lived there in the 1860’s? What is life like now in Savannah?

10.  Find out the major career of women in the 1860’s. How is that different today?

11.  Take an imaginary trip to the 1860’s. How would you travel then? How would you heat your house? Make a display about your findings.

12.  Find out what the Juliette Low game is and teach it to another troop or group.
